In just a few days, the /afk site will be up and our fans will get a chance to glimpse the official teaser trailer.  Many man-hours have gone in to this project and the best is yet to come.  The hard work continues…

P.S.  I have stared into the eyes of the beast, and she’s a beauty.  The trailer, I mean.

Things I’ve Seen

I spent some time watching movie trailers on the net recently. Don’t do that as much as I used to. Probably because I’ve been largely disappointed with film the past couple years. And a lot of my computer time is dedicated to following what’s happening in the comic and television worlds. But, nonetheless, trailers…

Broken English: I’ll probably watch this. Granted, it looks like Parker Posey and Zoe Cassavetes doing a poor man’s Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Coppola. A woman travels to a foreign country (France) and experiences an emotional reawakening via the local culture and a handsome Frenchman. Directed by the daughter of veteran director John Cassavetes. Starting to see some parallels here?

Gone Baby Gone: The directorial debut of Mr. Benjamin Affleck. Adapted from a book by Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River. Which means more Boston accents and more murder in a town that “protects their own.” To be honest, this is an effective trailer. In no small part due to the frame-chewing capabilities of Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris. This film stars Affleck’s little bro Casey (who looks really bored). But — Boston? Crime? Ed Harris? Morgan Freeman? That’s worth a ticket.

Cloverfield: This top secret JJ Abrams produced genre film allegedly does for monster movies what Blair Witch did for horror. The trailer is excellent. We’re watching through a handheld video camera a going away party for “Rob” who apparently is an all-around good dude with a big crew of friends. The party is interrupted by what appears to be an earthquake. And then there’s a monstrous roar. New York starts exploding and complications ensue. This film is written by Drew Goddard who was/is one of the better writers on both Alias and Lost. Good times.

I saw an ad in the LA Weekly today for a film called Interview starring Steve Buscemi and Sienna Miller. The tag line says, “A journalist and a starlet take on media, truth and celebrity.” Co-written and directed by Buscemi. Worth a look, I think.

Mental Monsoon

It’s early. I am momentarily blinded from the glow of my laptop screen, as we both stir from our slumber. A moment of solitude presents itself in the wake of the arrival of the Arizona monsoon, complete with bellowing thunder and brilliant flashes of lightning. If you have never witnessed the intensity of these electrical phenomenas, add it to your list (if you have a list).

For me, shutting off the mind has always been a problem. It would seem fitting that a blast of lightning awoke me, and, subsequently, prevented me from allowing sweet sleep to seize suddenly. And so, here I am, squinting at the face of my personal electrical companion. “Hey, gorgeous.”

It’s been a busy few weeks. /afk is progressing nicely, and remains the reason why my mind is so hard to shut down at this point. We have developed an outline that seems to encompass much of my vision for this project. It will serve as a great place to start and I could not be more excited about our post-production team. Transcription remains tedious, but is also on its way to being complete. Additionally, all of the final interviews will be complete prior to SDCC. There is a level of honesty in the interviews that I have already conducted that simply makes me smile in the moment. I can finally envision the complete project and it is truly satisfying.

Marketing materials are under way to ensure that there is a buzz about /afk beyond my own amicable fantasies. And so, there is another financial assault on the pocketbook. Yet, the ideas that we have are excellent and very inventive so I am confident in their success. Great idea guys!

Business is slow. But, in its absence is a rising surge that will carry me quickly and safely to shore. That shore being rather distant from my landlocked desert oasis. But, I digress.

And so, I await the time (when Kyra wakes up) where I can grind up the morning beans and imbibe the blessed brew. Trader Joe’s Dark French Roast FTW. Yes, French Roast; the Italians are on sabbatical.
